Press release - Maxime Bernier Will Attend Court Case in Winnipeg to Support PPC Member’s Fight Against Arbitrary Covid Ticket

Ottawa, ON, May 27, 2024 — The leader of the People’s Party of Canada, Maxime Bernier, will be in Winnipeg on Wednesday to attend the court case of local resident Todd Dube, who is fighting a $1300 ticket for attending a PPC rally during the pandemic.

Mr. Dube was present with hundreds of other PPC supporters and opponents of covid lockdowns at an event on June 12th 2021 at the Forks, where Maxime Bernier was supposed to be speaking. However, the PPC leader ended up not attending, having been arrested and put in jail for 12 hours the day before, and told to promptly leave the province, because he met a dozen supporters in a park.

Mr. Dube will be arguing that the law was enforced arbitrarily and that his ticket was an instance of political persecution. He says he attended the Black Lives Matter rally with thousands of people at the Legislative building (standing right beside former Chief of Police Devon Clunis) during the period when the same outdoor gathering restrictions applied, when no enforcement was present. There were also a very large Sikhs for Farmers rally and a Nurses rally during the same period, again with no enforcement of the mandate.

“However when I went to hear Max Bernier speak, there were eight enforcement officers on the rooftop with telescopic lenses to identify and charge the people gathering. I will not stand for political persecution in Canada. Therefore I will stand and plead ‘not guilty’ to the Manitoba government’s targeted enforcement of its baseless restrictions,” said Todd Dube, who is a founding member of the People's Party.

“Not only were these covid mandates useless, awful examples of authoritarian measures, and, in my opinion, unconstitutional. But they were also enforced arbitrarily and disproportionately targeted political opponents like me and PPC supporters,” says Bernier. “It’s no coincidence that other, politically correct protests were not targeted, while ours were. There is no real political freedom if we don’t have freedom of assembly and freedom to protest authoritarian measures. I’m proud to be in Winnipeg to support Todd.”

Bernier, Dube, and his lawyer Kyle Morgan will address the media and answer questions at the entrance of the Winnipeg Courthouse at 9:30 am, just before the start of the court hearing at 10:00.
